Worldwide shortage of water and cost of irrigation needs an emphasis on developing methods of irrigation that minimize water use (maximize the water use efficiency). In water limited environments, plant productivity is determined jointly by the amount of water available and the efficiency by which the water in used by the plant. It is now recognized that tuned irrigation can have a positive impact on the crop yield along with improved water use efficiency.
Under Indian situation, the irrigation scheduling based on soil moisture is not is vogue due to the non-available of simple, easy to use, rugged, effective and inexpensive Soil moisture indicators. This necessitated the innovation of a SOIL MOISTURE INDICATOR that can be used easily by the farmer to assess the status of soil moisture before scheduling irrigation.
